10 tips to begin a keto diet

Owing to our lifestyles today, a good diet and an adequate amount of rigorous exercise have become a must. Think about it – you’re perpetually glued to your screens at home or sitting behind a desk at work. Your body then needs to be healthy and happy. And it all begins by eating clean.

While there are a number of diets that are doing the rounds today, one of the most popular ones is the keto diet. It’s one of the most talked-about diets today, and you’ll probably find your Instagram feed blowing up with pictures of people who’ve lost weight by following this diet or who love posting pictures of their keto meals. And if you’ve been meaning to join the bandwagon, now’s as good a time as any!

So, if you’re wondering how you can begin following this high-fat, low-carb diet, this is us sharing a few handy tips with you.

1. Do your research

Never, ever begin anything new without knowing enough about it! It could be the place you’re traveling to next, that new phone you’ve been wanting to buy or even the diet you want to start following! It’s only when you do your research in a thorough fashion, that you will be able to know exactly what you’re signing up for. In a nutshell, you’re going to be prepared for it and so, your chances of sticking to the diet are higher. So, always do your research.

2. Start prepping

Preparation is key. Before you begin your keto diet, make sure that your kitchen is fully prepared for this shift. This means throwing out junk food and other kinds of processed food products. Read the labels on products to educate yourself on the number of carbs or fats that are present in what you’re buying. Stock up your refrigerator with fibrous green veggies and stay away from root veggies. You could also prep by pre-making salads and storing them in containers in the fridge, especially when you’re on a vegetarian keto diet.

3. Keep yourself hydrated

Even before you begin following the keto diet, make sure that your body is getting enough water. If you aren’t drinking enough water in a day, start doing that right away! While on a diet, you absolutely must stay hydrated in order to keep your electrolytes balanced out. So, pull out your planners or download an app – do what you can in order to keep track of the amount of water you’re consuming in a day. Take it from us – it’s vital!

4. Stock up on coconut oil

Think we’re speaking gibberish? We aren’t. Consuming coconut oil is a great way to swing your body into the state of ketosis. This is because coconut oil is rich in medium-chain triglycerides (fats). These fats are taken into your liver and are quickly converted into ketones, for energy. Having said that, don’t go all out by pouring coconut oil into every meal! We suggest taking it slow. Begin with a teaspoon a day and then increase it to two to three tablespoons a day. So, before you start your keto diet, go grab some coconut oil.

5. Start exercising

If you don’t exercise already, we suggest striking while the iron is hot! It’s important to keep your body active and toned, even before you begin a diet plan. In fact, studies say that being more active helps you get into ketosis faster. However, don’t expect magical results! The beginning of your keto diet may come with mood swings, headaches or even fatigue. You can take it easy during that period, but it’s definitely advisable to get your body used to some exercise before you begin dieting.

6. Eat only when hungry

If you’re somebody who loves snacking and are aiming at starting off a keto diet, start limiting your food intake. Instead of eating about 4 to 6 meals a day, eat only when you’re hungry. Here’s a good trick: If you feel the urge to snack, ask yourself ‘Would I like to eat an apple?’ If the answer is yes, you’re hungry. If not, you aren’t and it’s just an urge to snack on something that’s probably loaded with carbs. So, make sure you’re eating fewer carbs and limiting your daily meals if they’re one too many.

7. Keep sugar at bay

If you’ve got a penchant for sweet, sugary things, be warned – a keto diet does not allow you to indulge. A good idea would be for you to swap sugar with spices such as cinnamon. Instead of sugar, you can dust some cinnamon powder onto your tea or into your milk, without worrying about veering off course.

8. Find a friend

Starting a keto diet is not easy. It’s seriously an uphill task. So, find a friend who’s equally interested in this diet and follow it together. This will help you stay motivated and keep on track. Besides, it’ll sure be a great deal of fun!

9. Find alternatives to your favourites

Let’s face it. You’re definitely going to miss those high-carb meals once you begin your keto diet. But you can always make some healthy swaps! For instance, start eating pizza that comes with a cauliflower crust. Instead of using bread for a wrap, opt for lettuce. You can even have desserts, provided they’re whipped up using coconut or almond flour. Start making these little tweaks to your diet and you’ll find that your ‘keto journey’ will be slightly more manageable.

10. Consult a doctor

For your own peace of mind and to better understand if your body is well-equipped to adapt to this diet, consult a good doctor. As with any other diet, the keto diet is not for everyone. Each person’s body is different and you must understand how yours works before beginning a whole new diet. So, always speak to a doctor before beginning your keto diet plan. Now that we’ve given you all the tips that you could possibly need, what are you waiting for?
